I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Online Fraud or Scams, which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. Today I had a lengthy discussion with a victim of fraud they wanted me to send a message out to prevent further victims.
The fraud in mentioned relates to the offender pretending to be a Police officer on the phone looking into a "serious fraud" job. The offender states that they are working in the fraud department and need the victim to withdraw money from the bank and hand it over to the "Police".
I have heard of this scam before and they might say that they are looking into the bank exchanging fake notes or jewellers with fake gold/silver etc and need you to withdraw this cash or gold and hand it over to them for testing. They will use Police jargon, explain Police procedures and be very believable.
They will pressure victims to not talk to anyone about it otherwise it "could damage the case". I cannot state how believable these people are and they are very, very clever. I just want to reiterate the Police will never, ever ask you for money for any reason. We will not ask you for gold, money or jewellery.
The victim I spoke with today did everything right by hanging up the landline and calling 101 to confirm the officers identity, unfortunatly they offender did not clear the line ,and then went on pretending to be 101 and confirmed the fake officers identity making them sound even more legitimate.
If you need to confirm an officers identity, hang up the phone and dial 101 on a separate device. If the officer is asking for cash or any exchanges then hang up and report the call to Report Fraud website listed below.
